JUNIOR LEADERS' CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS

SENIOR PATROL LEADER (SPL)

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Develops agenda for and chairs monthly Patrol Leader's Council (PLC)
  • Notifies all Troop elected officers of all Troop activities in a timely manner
  • Runs weekly Troop meeting and all other Troop activities
  • Guides the PLC in developing the Troop's monthly program, as well as all other Troop activities
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

ASSISTANT SENIOR PATROL LEADER (ASPL)

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Notifies all Troop appointed officers of all Troop activities in a timely manner
  • Fills in for the SPL as necessary
  • Performs duties as assigned by the SPL
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

PATROL LEADER

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Takes all possible steps towards earning the National Honor Patrol Award
  • Insures all Patrol members are notified for ALL Troop and Patrol activities in a timely manner
  • Plans all the Patrol's participation in all events in coordination with the Patrol's Assistant Scoutmaster
  • Represents the Patrol at the PLC
  • Insures a duty roster is prepared for all camping trips
  • Performs Patrol Leader's Conferences to insure the Patrol's Scouts are ready for Scoutmaster's Conferences
  • Escorts the Patrol's Scouts to Boards of Review and introduces them to the Board
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

PATROL SCRIBE

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Insures the Patrol's record book is kept up to date at all times, including results of uniform inspections and attendance
  • Collects money and permission slips for all the Patrol's activity participants and keeps records of what was turned in
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

PATROL INSTRUCTOR

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Takes all steps to insure all Patrol members who are not First Class advance at least 1 rank during his term in office
  • Insures that instruction and training needed to support planned themes and activities takes place
  • Insures all Patrol members' Scout Books are reconciled with the Advancement Chairperson's database
  • Insures the Patrol's Scouts are ready for Patrol Leader's Conferences
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

PATROL QUARTERMASTER

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Inventories the Patrol's equipment before and after each camping trip and remedies deficiencies in coordination with the Patrol's Assistant Scoutmaster and the Troop Quartermaster
  • Insures the proper equipment is present at all Patrol activities
  • Appoints and supervises the Patrol Grubmaster(s) for all camping trips
  • Insures the Patrol Flag is present at all Troop and Patrol events
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

TROOP GUIDE

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Appoints the Patrol Leader, Patrol Scribe, and Patrol Quartermaster for New Scout Patrols on a 1 month rotating basis, and insures each of these knows his duties
  • Supervises the Patrol Leader of the New Scout Patrol
  • Insures ALL New Scout Patrol members are notified for ALL Troop and Patrol activities in a timely manner
  • Plans all the Patrol's participation in all events in coordination with the Patrol Leader and the Patrol's Assistant Scoutmaster
  • Insures a duty roster is prepared for all camping trips
  • Insures the Patrol's Scouts are ready for Scoutmaster's Conferences and Boards of Review
  • Plans an instruction schedule for the New Scouts that will allow them to complete Second Class rank in their first 6 months in the Troop
  • Takes all possible steps towards earning the National Honor Patrol Award for the New Scout Patrol
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

TROOP QUARTERMASTER

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Supervises the Patrol Quartermasters in coordination with the Adult Troop Quartermaster
  • Insures a complete inventory of all Troop equipment is completed both before and after all camping trips
  • Insures the adult Quartermaster is aware of any material deficiencies of Troop equipment, and assists in remedying any deficiencies
  • Insures the Troop flags and sign are present at all Troop events
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

TROOP INSTRUCTOR

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Insures all Patrol Instructors are actively instructing the Scouts who have not yet reached First Class rank
  • Insures a Troop program of instruction is planned in preparation for all special events
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

TROOP BUGLER

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Is able to play the following calls on a trumpet, cornet, or bugle: Reveille, Chow Call, Assembly, To the Colors, Retreat, Taps, U.S. National Anthem
  • Brings a suitable instrument and plays all the above calls as appropriate at Troop events
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

TROOP HISTORIAN

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Keeps a diary of all Troop activities
  • Secures a volunteer to photograph candid pictures of all Troop events, and selects, with Scoutmaster approval, photos to be included in the Troop scrapbook
  • Maintains the Troop scrapbook
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

TROOP LIBRARIAN

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Maintains the Troop library of all books and resource materials
  • Maintains a check-out system for these materials
  • Conducts an inventory on assuming his position, and at least monthly thereafter
  • Contacts Scouts who have "overdue" materials
  • Notifies the Troop Treasurer if a Scout loses or otherwise does not return materials
  • Arranges for the replacement of missing materials with the Committee Chair
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

TROOP SCRIBE

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Keeps Troop records in an orderly manner
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

TROOP ORDER OF THE ARROW REPRESENTATIVE

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Represents the Troop by attending at least 75% of Chapter meetings and Lodge activities
  • Notifies all Troop OA members of all upcoming Lodge and Chapter events in a timely manner
  • Coordinates the Troop's OA election and reports the results to the Lodge
  • Arranges an appropriate Tap-out Ceremony for those elected
  • Notifies those elected al all upcoming Ordeals and insures their attendance at one, in so far as possible
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

DEN CHIEF

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Makes every effort to attend Den Chief Training
  • Attends 75% of the activities of his assigned Den and Pack
  • Performs the duties of Den Chief to the satisfaction of the Den Leader
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

CHAPLAIN'S AIDE

  • Attends 75% of all Troop and Patrol Activities
  • Attends Junior Leader Training for his position
  • Works with the adult Chaplain to develop weekly "Words of Wisdom" and nondenominational services
  • Delivers "Words of Wisdom" at each Scout meeting
  • Arranges for nondenominational religious Sunday services at each Troop event
  • Wears the Scout uniform properly to all appropriate Troop activities

NOTE: If a Scout is unable to attend Junior Leader Training and has previously attended Junior Leader Training for another position, the requirement for training may be waived by the Scoutmaster after careful explanation of the new position's duties at a Scoutmaster's Conference.
